Techniques for Fly Fishing for Bass

It is not difficult to fly fish for bass. In fact, it is one style of bass fishing where most avid bass fishermen caught their biggest prize. And if you are a novice at the sport and want to try fly fishing, here are some techniques that you can use if you want to try fly fishing for bass.

In fly fishing, it pays to know that you should be out in open waters where you can freely cast your line. Although there are some that say you can catch your prized bass near rocky areas and near fallen trees where their preys are also located, you should also know that bass foray out into the open waters from time to time. It is during these times that most bass fishermen catch the biggest bass. Keep in mind though that you should put some great distance between you and your line so that the rocking of the boat will not alert the bass to your presence.

When fly fishing, you have to have patience. The fly should also be kept still as bass tend to inspect the lure first before they take a bite, so you will need your patience for the wait.

Fly fishing for bass can be a bit difficult for the novices, so you should choose a 6- to 7-weight rod. You also have to remember that the smaller the rod is the more difficulty you will have casting larger flies.

Another technique in fly fishing for bass is casting the line until about 15 feet in front of you. Allow the fly to sink and let it drift down until it barely touches the bottom of the water then troll the fly slowly until the line is almost vertical to the water. As stated above, bass inspect the fly first before it takes a bite so trolling slowly will pay off in the end.

You can also mimic the actions of a wounded baitfish by stopping and starting a fly. It is done by allowing the fly to sink, pointing the rod tip to where the fly sank, then stripping quickly.

Always remember that bass also need to look for its food. So if you see a school of little fishes like minnows, there is a good chance that bass are abundant in that area as well since these little fishes are part of the bass' diet.

The best tip when it comes to bass fishing is to get a boat, rent one if you do not have your own. This allows you mobility to reach potential areas where there is abundant bass.
