Just because it is winter does not mean that you cannot enjoy your favorite sport of bass fishing. There are still a lot of ways to enjoy your hobby and not let the cold weather bring you down.
Of course, the most obvious solution to your dilemma is to go somewhere warm like Mexico and Florida if you are really itching to go bass fishing. But if that is not possible then you have to start learning techniques on how to fish bass in cold weather. With this being said, here are some tips in bass fishing in cold weather.
The first thing that you have to remember in cold weather bass fishing is that the bass are sluggish in cold weather. What this means is that you have to fish slower than usual to allow the bass to catch up with your lure and take a bite. You need to have patience also when bass fishing in the colder season because bass do slow down in cold waters.
Second tip is knowing how bass behave, be it cold or warm weather. If you see a school of small fish, then there is a very high likelihood that there are also bass lurking around. Your patience will be needed though as bass tend not to eat that much in colder weather, so you should expect a fewer catch.
Another great tip in cold weather bass fishing is to use a smaller lure. Although bigger lures will work in warmer weather, you have to put them away during the colder season, and the best lures to use are hair jigs as well as plastic grubs that are soft. The movement they create in the water mimics that of cold water preys.
If you are having a hard time with artificial bass lures, then try live ones. Nightcrawlers and minnows are the favorite foods of bass. Likewise, you can also try shiners as well as creek chubs.
Lastly, fish deep in cold weather. It might take you 18 to 50 feet below water before you feel a bass bite, but once you feel one bite, success can be yours
